Rhythm Tap — Play Free Online

Free timing test — instant play, no signup, no download

Rhythm Tap scores how precisely you hit a beat, rating each tap from perfect down to a miss. It measures sensorimotor synchronisation — the ability to align a movement with an external rhythm — which is a well-studied ability with a surprising amount of individual variation.

How to play

A beat begins playing.

Tap in time with it.

Each tap is rated on its timing accuracy.

Perfect, great, good and miss ratings accumulate.

Your score is the distribution of ratings across the run.

What it actually trains

Sensorimotor synchronisation and timing precision. Most people tap slightly ahead of the beat rather than on it, a consistent bias known as negative mean asynchrony.

Tips to score higher

Listen for the beat before you start tapping. Joining mid-phrase guarantees a bad opening.

Move your whole hand, not just a finger. Larger movements are easier to time precisely.

Feel the pulse between beats rather than reacting to each one. Reacting is always late.

If you are consistently early, that is normal — nudge deliberately later rather than trying to react faster.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I tap slightly early?

Negative mean asynchrony: most people tap a few tens of milliseconds ahead of an auditory beat. It is one of the most consistent findings in timing research.

Does musical training help?

Considerably. Trained musicians show markedly tighter timing, and the gap narrows with practice for everyone.

Do headphones help?

Yes. Speaker latency and room reflections both blur the beat you are aiming at.

Is this the same as Interval Challenge?

No. Interval Challenge asks you to produce a duration with no external reference; this asks you to lock onto one.
