Tangram Builder gives you the seven classic tangram pieces and a silhouette to fill. Tangrams are a Chinese dissection puzzle at least two centuries old, and the seven pieces can form thousands of figures — the constraint is that every piece must be used and none may overlap.
Look at the target silhouette.
Drag the seven tangram pieces into position.
Rotate and flip pieces as needed.
All seven pieces must be used, with no overlaps.
Fill the silhouette exactly to complete the puzzle.
Spatial construction and decomposition — seeing how a whole breaks into parts. It is a well-established spatial exercise and the skill generalises to other fitting and assembly problems.
Place the two large triangles first. They account for half the total area and they constrain everything else.
The square and the parallelogram are the awkward pieces. Work out where they go early rather than leaving them to last.
The parallelogram is the only piece that must sometimes be flipped, not just rotated. If nothing fits, try flipping it.
Look at the silhouette's corners. Sharp corners can only be made by a triangle's point.
Yes. That is the defining rule of a tangram, and it is what makes the puzzles hard.
Yes. The parallelogram in particular often requires it, since it is the only piece without mirror symmetry.
The puzzle is Chinese in origin and was widely popular in Europe and America by the early nineteenth century.
Yes — every silhouette here is generated from a valid arrangement of all seven pieces.
