Flag Quizzes
All flag identification games.
Every flag quiz on the site in one place β the whole world, one continent at a time, or the lookalike pairs that catch almost everyone. No signup, no timer unless you want one.
Which flag quiz should you start with?
If you have never done one, start with Flag to Country. You see a flag and pick from four options, so recognition does the work rather than recall, and four options means you learn from the near-misses instead of just failing.
Once you are getting most of those right, switch to Country to Flag. Going in that direction is harder because you have to summon the design from memory rather than recognise it on sight, and that is the direction that actually sticks.
Then narrow by continent. European flags are the easiest block to finish because so many are simple tricolours. African flags are the hardest for most people, partly because there are 54 of them and partly because so many share the same four colours. Asian flags sit in between.
Save Lookalike Flags for last. It is deliberately unfair.
Why so many flags look the same
Flags are not designed at random. Most fall into a handful of families, and once you can see the family, you have cut the memorisation work by more than half.
- Pan-African colours β red, gold and green, often with black. Ethiopia was never colonised and its colours became the template for independence flags across the continent, which is why Ghana, Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Cameroon and many others share a palette.
- Pan-Arab colours β red, white, black and green, in various arrangements. Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Jordan, Sudan, Kuwait, the UAE and Palestine all draw on the same four.
- The Nordic cross β an off-centre cross, shifted toward the hoist. Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland all use it, and once you know the shape you only need the colours.
- Tricolours β France set the pattern and dozens followed. Vertical or horizontal, three bands, sometimes with an emblem added.
- The Union Jack canton β a small British flag in the top-left corner, left over from empire: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tuvalu still carry it.
Learn the families first and the individual flags become variations rather than 197 unrelated pictures.
The pairs that catch everyone
- Chad and Romania β both blue, yellow and red vertical tricolours. Chad's blue is darker. This is the closest pair in the world and there is genuinely very little else to go on.
- Indonesia and Monaco β both red over white. Monaco's is shorter and squarer; Indonesia's is longer. Poland is the same two colours inverted, white over red, and that inversion catches people constantly.
- Ireland and CΓ΄te d'Ivoire β green, white, orange versus orange, white, green. Same three colours, opposite order.
- Netherlands and Luxembourg β both red, white and blue horizontal bands. Luxembourg's blue is noticeably lighter.
- Australia and New Zealand β both blue with a Union Jack and the Southern Cross. New Zealand's stars are red with white outlines and there are four; Australia has six white stars including the large Commonwealth Star below the canton.
- Chad, Romania, Andorra and Moldova β all blue-yellow-red verticals. Andorra and Moldova add coats of arms, which is the fastest way to separate them from the other two.
Flags that break the rules
- Nepal is the only national flag that is not a rectangle. It is two stacked pennants.
- Switzerland and Vatican City are the only two square national flags.
- Paraguay has different emblems on the front and back, which almost no other national flag does.
- Mozambique carries a modern rifle on its flag.
- Cyprus shows a map of the country itself, which only a small handful of flags do.
These are worth knowing because quizzes love them and because they are genuinely memorable, which makes them free points.
How to actually get good at this
Play in short bursts rather than long ones. Twenty flags a day for two weeks beats 200 flags once, because recognition is built by repeated retrieval, not by exposure.
After each round, look at what you missed rather than what you got. The misses are the entire value of the exercise. Most people find their gaps cluster geographically β an entire region they have never looked at properly β and clearing one region at a time is far faster than shuffling the whole world every round.
Frequently asked questions
How many flags are there in the world?
It depends what you count. There are 193 UN member states, and most flag quizzes use around 195 to 197 by adding Vatican City and Palestine, which hold observer status. Add territories, dependencies and sub-national flags and the number runs well past 250, which is why quizzes advertising 254 flags exist.
Which country flags look almost identical?
Chad and Romania are the closest pair β both blue, yellow and red vertical tricolours, with Chad using a darker blue. Indonesia and Monaco are both red over white and differ mainly in proportion. Ireland and CΓ΄te d'Ivoire use the same three colours in opposite order, and the Netherlands and Luxembourg differ only in the shade of blue.
Why do so many African flags use red, gold and green?
They are the Pan-African colours, taken from Ethiopia. Ethiopia was the one African state that was never colonised, so when other countries gained independence many adopted its palette as a deliberate statement. Black is often added to represent the people.
What is the easiest way to memorise world flags?
Learn the design families before the individual flags β Nordic crosses, Pan-African and Pan-Arab colours, tricolours, Union Jack cantons. That collapses most of the world into a few patterns. Then work one continent at a time rather than shuffling the whole world, and review only what you missed.
