Typing Drills Online: Free Speed & Accuracy Practice That Actually Sticks

Typing drills online only work if you'll actually do them. That means short (under 5 minutes), targeted (real words, not "asdf asdf"), and instantly available. Every drill below fits that bill — no signup, no software, no lessons. ▶ Take the Typing Test

The 5 Free Typing Drills That Work

Typing Test: Standard 60-second test — the benchmark. Track your WPM weekly.

Typing Speed: Longer drill for endurance and consistency.

Key Accuracy: Precision-first drill — accuracy over speed.

Word Sprint: Rapid word-by-word — trains word-level fluency.

Number Typing: Number row practice (weakest area for most typists).

A 10-Minute Daily Typing Routine

Minute 1: Warm-up on Key Accuracy — no time pressure, hit 100%.

Minutes 2–3: Two rounds of Typing Test — record your best.

Minutes 4–5: Word Sprint — build word-level speed.

Minutes 6–8: Typing Speed longer drill — build endurance.

Minutes 9–10: Number Typing — patch your weakest area.

How to Break Your WPM Plateau

Slow down for 3 days. Type at 85% of your max speed with 100% accuracy. Speed comes back automatically.

Look at the screen, not the keyboard. Every glance down is 200+ ms lost.

Fix your weakest fingers. Right pinky and left index cause most errors — drill them specifically.

Practice bigrams. Common two-letter combos (th, er, in, on) unlock disproportionate speed.

Use real content. Type your own emails, notes, or Wikipedia paragraphs — it beats random-word tests for real-world speed.

Measure it properly: the WPM calculator turns characters and minutes into gross and net WPM, and the reading time calculator shows the other side of words per minute, how long a text takes to read

What Typing Drills Actually Train

Typing is a motor skill built from thousands of small finger movements that become automatic with practice. A drill is useful when it isolates one weak part of that skill: a particular finger, a hard letter pair, numbers and symbols, or keeping your eyes off the keys. Generic practice on random text helps too, but targeted drills move the number faster because they spend your minutes where the errors are.

Drills also train error control. Each mistake costs you the wrong key, the backspace and the retype, so a typist at 60 WPM with 90% accuracy is often slower in practice than one at 50 WPM with 98%. That is why every drill on this page starts slow and accurate before it gets fast.

How to Do a Typing Drill Properly, Step by Step

Sit with your forearms level and wrists floating, fingers resting on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;).

Start with an accuracy drill such as Key Accuracy. Go slowly enough to make almost no mistakes.

Move to a word drill such as Word Sprint and keep your eyes on the screen, not the keys.

Finish with one minute on the Typing Test. Note both speed and accuracy.

If accuracy is under 95%, slow down tomorrow. If it is over 97% two days running, push the pace a little.

Tips by Level

Under 30 WPM

Learn finger positions before speed. Use one finger per key column every time.

Cover your hands with a cloth if you keep looking down.

30–60 WPM

Drill your slowest letter pairs. Most typing tests show which keys cost you time.

Practise common words until they come out as one movement.

Over 60 WPM

Read one word ahead of the one you are typing.

Practise punctuation and numbers, which slow most fast typists down.

What the Research Says

An analysis of 136 million keystrokes from 168,000 people found an average typing speed of about 52 WPM. Fast typists made fewer errors and used a consistent finger-to-key mapping rather than simply moving faster (Dhakal et al., CHI, 2018). That is why the drills above put accuracy first. Frequently asked questions

What are the best typing drills online?

The best typing drills are short and focused — 60–120 second tests, played daily. Our Typing Test and Typing Speed games run exactly that format, targeting real-word text (not the awkward classical typing exercises).

How long until my typing speed improves?

Most adults gain 5–10 WPM within 2 weeks of daily 10-minute practice. Getting from 60 to 80 WPM typically takes 6–8 weeks, and 80+ WPM plateaus require targeted accuracy work.

Should I focus on speed or accuracy first?

Accuracy first, always. Errors are hidden speed — every backspace costs more time than typing correctly. Aim for 97%+ accuracy before pushing WPM.

Do typing drills actually help programmers?

Yes, but symbol-heavy drills matter more than paragraph drills. Practice { } [ ] ( ) ; / and quotes until they're as fast as letters.

Short daily drills work best: accuracy first, then words, then a one-minute test. Keep accuracy above 95%, drill your slowest keys, and the WPM figure will rise steadily. Accuracy first: the typing accuracy guide explains why.
