What it actually trains

Recognising equivalent fractions by their common factor, rather than by cross-multiplying. That recognition is what makes adding, comparing and simplifying fractions quick, and it leans directly on the times tables.

Tips to score higher

Simplify before you compare. Two fractions in lowest terms are equal only if they are identical.

Check the top and bottom for a shared factor. If both are even, halve both and look again.

The times tables do the work here — 7/21 collapses the moment you see 21 as 3 × 7.

For comparing, make the denominators match or convert both to decimals. Whichever is faster for those particular numbers.

What are equivalent fractions?

Fractions that name the same number. 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 and 50/100 are all equivalent, because each is the previous one multiplied top and bottom by the same amount.

How do I simplify a fraction?

Divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number until no common factor is left. 18/24 divides by 6 to give 3/4.

Why does multiplying top and bottom not change the value?

Because you are multiplying by a disguised 1. Multiplying 3/4 by 2/2 gives 6/8, and 2/2 is 1, so the value is unchanged.

Is there a quick way to compare two fractions?

Cross-multiply: compare 3 × 8 against 4 × 5 to decide between 5/8 and 3/4. For simple numbers, converting both to decimals is often faster.
