This is a full-year geography plan built entirely from free resources. It assumes two short sessions a week โ around twenty minutes each โ which is enough for a child to finish the year knowing the world map properly.
Term 1 (weeks 1โ12): The framework
Weeks 1โ2 โ Continents and oceans. Locate all seven continents and five oceans on a blank map. Weeks 3โ5 โ North America, including the Caribbean island states most curricula skip. Weeks 6โ7 โ South America. Only 12 countries, so this is the confidence-building term. Weeks 8โ12 โ Europe. Split into Western, Nordic, Central/Eastern and Balkan blocks.
Assessment: one run at each continent quiz, scores recorded.
Term 2 (weeks 13โ24): The hard half
Weeks 13โ18 โ Asia, one region per week: East, Southeast, South, Central, Western. Weeks 19โ24 โ Africa, one region per week. This is the term that separates a real geography education from a token one, so don't compress it.
Assessment: full Name All 197 Countries attempt at the end of term. Compare against the week-one score.
Term 3 (weeks 25โ36): Depth and retention
Weeks 25โ28 โ Capitals. Work continent by continent from the world capitals list, building decks with the flashcard generator. Weeks 29โ32 โ Flags, using Flags of the World. Weeks 33โ34 โ US states and capitals with the 50 states list and the state quizzes. Weeks 35โ36 โ Country deep-dives. Each child picks three countries and researches them using the country comparison tool and the country pages.
The daily habit that carries it
Add the daily challenges โ one country, one flag, one capital โ as a two-minute morning routine. Over a school year that's more retrieval practice than the lessons themselves provide.
What you'll want on paper
A blank world map, a blank US map, and a physical globe or wall map that stays visible. Printable worksheets and maps are on the printables page, and the teacher resources page collects everything lesson-ready.
Records for portfolio states
Screenshot quiz scores at the start and end of each term. Three data points per child per subject area is usually more than enough evidence of progress, and it costs you no extra prep.
