Country Quizzes
Borders, populations, and country trivia.
Every country quiz on the site — name all 197, identify them by silhouette, sort them by size, population, language, currency or coastline.
Start with the one that matters
Name All 197 Countries is the benchmark. Everything else here is practice for it or a different angle on the same knowledge. Most people manage 90 to 130 on a first attempt and are surprised by which regions collapse — usually West Africa, Central Asia and the Pacific.
The full 197 is achievable. It takes a few weeks of short sessions, not months, provided you work regionally rather than alphabetically.
The other angles, and what each is actually for
- Country Silhouette — trains shape recognition, which is what map quizzes and geography bees test. Chile, Italy, Norway and Vietnam are easy; the landlocked African states are brutal.
- Borders Quiz — builds the mental adjacency map. Knowing what borders what is how you reconstruct a region you have half-forgotten.
- Higher or Lower: Population and Higher or Lower: Area — build a sense of scale. Most people badly misjudge African and Asian populations, and almost everyone underestimates how large Algeria, Kazakhstan and Argentina are.
- Currency to Country and Language to Country — useful cross-references, and surprisingly effective memory hooks. Currency names often encode history.
- Island Nations and Landlocked Countries — two categories quizzes love. There are far more island nations than most people expect, and the landlocked list includes two countries that are landlocked by other landlocked countries: Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan.
- Largest and Smallest Countries — the extremes, and easy points once learned.
Why regional beats alphabetical
Your brain stores places spatially. Learning countries in alphabetical order fights that, which is why people who try it can reel off Afghanistan through Azerbaijan and then stall.
Work the map instead. Clear West Africa. Then East Africa. Then Central Asia. Each region is a chunk of ten to twenty, which is a session, and regions have internal logic — shared borders, shared colonial history, shared languages — that alphabetical lists destroy.
The regions that will be your weak spots
Almost universally:
- West Africa — Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia.
- Central Asia — the five -stans.
- The Pacific — Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Palau, Micronesia, Marshall Islands.
- The Caribbean — the smaller island states.
- The Balkans — particularly the more recent states.
If you clear those five blocks you will have added forty-odd countries to your total, and they are the forty that almost nobody has.
Country reference pages
Every country on the site has its own page with flag, capital, population, area, languages and currency, plus the quizzes that include it. Useful when a quiz surfaces somewhere you cannot place at all.
Frequently asked questions
How many countries are there in the world?
There are 193 UN member states. Adding Vatican City and Palestine, which hold permanent observer status, gives 195, and many quizzes use 196 or 197 by including Taiwan or Kosovo. The number depends entirely on which disputed cases are counted.
What is the best way to learn all the countries?
Region by region, not alphabetically. Your memory for places is spatial, so learning a contiguous block — West Africa, then Central Asia, then the Pacific — lets neighbouring countries reinforce each other. Alphabetical order deliberately scatters them.
Which countries are landlocked by landlocked countries?
Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan. Both are landlocked and every country they border is also landlocked, so reaching the sea means crossing at least two borders. They are the only two in the world.
How long does it take to learn every country?
For most people, a few weeks of short daily sessions rather than months. The first hundred come quickly because they are familiar; the last fifty are the work, and they are concentrated in West Africa, Central Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
