Geography Quiz Arcade

Higher or Lower: Population

Pick the country with the larger population.

Two countries, one question: which has more people? Simple format, and it exposes how badly most people misjudge population.

What this quiz actually teaches

Most people's sense of population is built from news coverage and travel, not from numbers, and both skew badly. European countries feel bigger than they are; African and Southeast Asian countries feel much smaller.

A few rounds of this and the corrections start to land.

The systematic errors

African populations are underestimated, heavily. Nigeria has more people than any European country by a wide margin. Ethiopia and Egypt are each comparable to the largest European states. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is far larger than most people guess.

Southeast Asia is underestimated. Indonesia is one of the most populous countries on Earth and rarely features in people's mental top five. The Philippines and Vietnam are both larger than any single European country.

Small dense countries are overestimated. Singapore, Israel and the Netherlands feel significant because they are prominent, but each is well below what most people guess.

Russia is overestimated. It is by far the largest country by area, and people transfer that to population, where it ranks far lower.

The anchors worth memorising

Having a handful of reference points turns guesswork into estimation:

  • The two largest countries are each well over a billion.
  • The United States is the clear third, but an order of magnitude below the top two.
  • Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Brazil and Bangladesh form the next tier.
  • Most large European countries sit in a fairly narrow band well below that tier.
  • Below about ten million you are into the small-state range where most of the world's countries actually live.

With those five bands, any head-to-head becomes "which band is each in?" rather than a coin flip.

The area version

Higher or Lower: Area runs the same format on land area, and people misjudge that just as badly in a different direction. Algeria is the largest country in Africa and most people name Sudan, Egypt or South Africa. Kazakhstan is vastly larger than it feels. Argentina, Brazil and Australia are all bigger than people expect relative to each other.

Playing both back to back is the fastest way to see that population and area rankings are almost unrelated โ€” which is exactly the insight the country pages on this site make explicit.

Why this is better practice than it looks

Binary choice with immediate feedback is an efficient learning format. You are not asked to produce a number, only to compare, and every round either confirms a mental model or corrects it. Fifty rounds of this reshapes your sense of scale faster than reading a ranked list.

Frequently asked questions

Which African country has the largest population?

Nigeria, by a substantial margin, and it has more people than any country in Europe. Ethiopia and Egypt are next and are each comparable to the largest European states โ€” a ranking most people find surprising.

Is Russia one of the most populous countries?

No. Russia is by far the largest country by land area, but it ranks much lower by population. People consistently overestimate it because they transfer the area ranking across.

What is the most common mistake in population quizzes?

Underestimating African and Southeast Asian countries and overestimating small, prominent European ones. Media coverage and travel familiarity drive the mental model far more than actual numbers do.

How is this different from the area quiz?

Higher or Lower: Area compares land area instead of people, and the rankings are almost unrelated. Playing both back to back is the quickest way to see that a country's size and its population have very little to do with each other.
