We run a brain games site and we do not claim that brain games make you smarter. Practising a cognitive task reliably improves performance on that task and on closely related tasks. This is called near transfer, it is fast, and it is not in dispute.
Whether that improvement spreads to unrelated abilities — better everyday memory, a higher IQ — is far transfer, and it is the claim the commercial brain training industry is built on. The larger and better-controlled studies have mostly failed to find it. We say so on every game page and at length in does brain training work .
What is well supported is an association between staying mentally and socially active and better cognitive ageing across large observational studies. That is an association rather than proof that any particular game causes the benefit, and we describe it that way.
