⏳18 Retro Games That Still Hold Up Today

Nostalgia and playability are different things. Plenty of beloved classics are painful to control now, while others feel like they could release next week with a fresh coat of paint.

This list is the second group: retro games that still hold up when you sit down with them today. We judged each on controls, pacing and whether the difficulty is fair or arcade-punishing.

Still perfect to play

Holds up with one caveat

  • Ocarina of Time (1998)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

Z-targeting still works; the Water Temple's boot-swapping does not. Play it with the 3DS version's fixes if you can.

  • Final Fantasy VII (1997)

    • PS1
    • PS5
    • Switch
    • Xbox
    • PC

The story and Materia hold up completely; the field models take an hour to adjust to. Modern versions add a fast-forward toggle.

  • Resident Evil 2 (1998) (1998)

    • PS1
    • PC

Fixed cameras create tension deliberately, but tank controls are a real barrier. The 2019 remake is the friendlier option.

  • GoldenEye 007 (1997)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO)
    • Xbox

Level design and objectives are still excellent; the original control scheme is not. The Xbox re-release adds dual-stick aiming.

  • Super Mario 64 (1996)

    • N64
    • Switch

Movement is still joyful, but the camera fights you in tight spaces. Worth the adjustment.

  • Age of Empires II (1999)

    • PC

Holds up entirely — but play the Definitive Edition, since the original's pathfinding and UI are the weak points.
