Best Simulation Games

Simulation covers two very different pleasures: running a system well, and inhabiting a routine. Management sims are the first. Life and farming sims are the second. Recommending across that line is where most simulation recommendations go wrong.

What makes a good one

Whether the system is legible. A good simulation lets you see why the number went down. A bad one gives you a dashboard and a shrug.

Life and farming sims

No fail state, a calendar, and somewhere that slowly becomes yours. Best in twenty-minute sittings.

  • Harvest Moon — The series that established the whole shape of this genre.
  • Viva Pinata — A gardening sim with a food chain underneath it.
  • Grounded — Survival crafting at insect scale, with an actual ending.

Vehicle and machine sims

Where operating the thing is the fantasy, and the startup procedure is part of the appeal rather than a barrier.

  • Steel Battalion — Forty buttons, an eject lever, and a real startup sequence.
  • Pilotwings — Flying lessons scored on the landing.
  • MechAssault — The same fiction with the spreadsheet removed.

Management and building

A system to tune rather than a character to play, and an evening that vanishes.

Common mistakes

  • Optimising a life sim on day one. Most of them are paced so that rushing the first year makes the rest of the game empty.
  • Buying a vehicle sim without checking what it expects from your hardware. Some genuinely need a wheel or a stick.
  • Treating a management sim's tutorial as optional. These are the games where it usually is not.

Questions

What is a cosy game?

A simulation with no fail state and no time pressure — Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Spiritfarer. The label is about how it feels to play rather than what genre it is in.

What should I play after Stardew Valley?

Coral Island if you want the same loop with more to do, My Time at Sandrock if you would rather build than farm, and Rune Factory if you want dungeons attached.

Are simulation games slow?

Deliberately. That is the appeal for most of them, and the ones that speed up — like the management sims — usually give you a time control to do it with.
