Arcade games were built around a coin. That single constraint produced everything the label still means: short runs, immediate difficulty, a score to beat, and a design that has to be legible in ten seconds because that is how long it had to convince you.
What makes a good one
Whether one more run is genuinely tempting. Arcade design is measured in the moment after you lose, and the games that survived are the ones where that moment feels like your fault.
Beat-em-ups and brawlers
One against many, twenty to forty minutes, and best with a second player.
- Streets of Rage 2 — The Genesis high point, and it still plays superbly.
- Golden Axe — Three characters, a magic meter, and creatures to ride.
- Dynamite Cop — Die Hard with a swordfish, and it knows exactly what it is.
Run-and-guns and shooters
One hit kills you, the patterns are the game, and a run is short enough to memorise.
- Contra — Two players, a spread gun, and no health bar.
- Gunstar Heroes — Treasure at their densest, and mechanically far richer than it looks.
- Sin and Punishment: Star Successor — Aiming and moving as two separate jobs.
Arcade racing and sport
Five-minute runs, no simulation, and a leaderboard.
Common mistakes
- Judging an arcade game by its length. Forty minutes was the design, not a shortcoming.
- Using save states in a run-based game and then wondering why it is not satisfying.
- Playing a two-player arcade game alone. Most of them were balanced for two and are noticeably harder solo.
Questions
Why are arcade games so hard?
They were designed to end. A machine that let you play for an hour on one coin did not earn its floor space, so difficulty was the business model.
What is a good arcade game to play today?
Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT: Shredder's Revenge are both modern, both excellent, and both built for two people on a sofa.
Are arcade ports faithful?
Modern collections usually are — the emulation is good and many include the original arcade ROM. Console ports from the era often were not, because the hardware could not manage it.
