Best Adventure Games

Adventure games are about a place and a story rather than a skill. The good ones are paced so you always have somewhere to go and a reason to go there, and they usually put their best writing in the side content that nothing forces you to see.

What makes a good one

Whether the world rewards curiosity. If wandering off the marked path pays you back with something written rather than something looted, it is a good adventure game. If it pays you back with a collectible counter, it is a checklist with scenery.

Open worlds worth getting lost in

Big, unmarked, and confident enough not to tell you where to go. These live or die on whether the horizon is interesting.

  • Elden Ring — Nothing marked, nothing explained, and the best payoff for curiosity in the genre.
  • Red Dead Redemption — Slow on purpose, and the travelling is the point.
  • Morrowind — Directions given as landmarks, and a world genuinely strange enough to warrant it.

Story-first, played in a week

Tight, linear, and written to be finished. These are the ones to recommend to someone who does not have a hundred hours.

  • Firewatch — Two people on a radio in a forest, and it carries entirely on the writing.
  • Heavy Rain — A branching thriller where characters can die and the story carries on.
  • Detroit: Become Human — The most elaborate branching its studio has built.

Quiet ones

No combat, no fail state, and a landscape to be in. Short by design and better for it.

  • Journey — Two hours, no words, and one anonymous stranger.
  • Ico — An empty castle, one companion, almost no dialogue.
  • Concrete Genie — Painting a dead town back to life, and gentle throughout.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing the main quest in an open world. In most of them the main quest is the weakest writing in the game.
  • Turning markers on because the first hour feels aimless. The aimlessness is usually the design, and it resolves.
  • Judging a story game by its combat. Several of the best ones have combat that is intentionally poor.

Questions

What counts as an adventure game?

Anywhere the story and the place matter more than the skill ceiling. That covers point-and-click, walking sims, narrative thrillers and most open-world games, which is why the label alone tells you very little.

What is a good short adventure game?

Firewatch, Journey and What Remains of Edith Finch are all finishable in an evening or two and none of them waste a minute.

Do I need to play a series in order?

Usually only where a game is a direct sequel — Horizon, The Last of Us and Tears of the Kingdom all assume the one before them. Most open-world series do not.
