The PS1 is the JRPG console. Square, Enix, Konami, Sony's own studios and a handful of plucky localizers turned the gray box into the place where a whole generation fell for turn-based battles, sprawling world maps and three-disc stories. This ranking weighs how well each game holds up today, how much it shaped the genre, and how easy it is to play legally in 2026 — official re-releases and remasters are noted for every entry.

1. Final Fantasy VII (1997)

Buy Final Fantasy VII:🛒Amazon🏪eBay🔑Kinguin

The game that took JRPGs mainstream outside Japan: pre-rendered backgrounds, full-motion video, the Materia system and a story about Cloud, Aerith and Sephiroth that people still argue about. It is still the most important PS1 RPG, and its pacing holds up better than its blocky field models suggest. The original is sold on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and mobile, while Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Rebirth retell it as a much larger modern action RPG.

Konami's war epic lets you recruit 108 Stars of Destiny, build up your own castle and live through one of the best-written rivalries in the genre. It was hard to find for years because the PS1 print run was small. Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (2025) finally brought it back on PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox and PC, with the original Suikoden included.

Square's follow-up to Chrono Trigger swaps time travel for parallel worlds, a cast of more than 40 recruitable characters and Yasunori Mitsuda's best soundtrack. The stamina-and-elements battle system still feels unlike anything else on the list. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition (2022) is on PS4, Switch, Xbox One and PC, with sharper character models, a battle-skip option and the Japan-only text adventure Radical Dreamers.

4. Final Fantasy Tactics (1998)

A tactical RPG about class, war and church politics, with a job system deep enough to lose a hundred hours in. Its grid battles and Ivalice setting went on to shape Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles (2025) is the modern version, on PS5, PS4, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a new script, full voice acting and the classic mode also included.

An enormous sci-fi story about giant mechs, religion, memory and identity, with a combo-based fighting system and some of the most ambitious writing Square ever shipped. Its second disc is famously compressed into narration because the team ran out of time, and it is still essential. Square Enix has never remastered it; the only official digital release is the PS one Classics version on the PS3, PSP and Vita store, so most players today track down the original disc.

6. Final Fantasy IX (2000)

A love letter to the series' fantasy roots, with crystal lore, black mages, airships and a cast led by the thief Zidane and the black mage Vivi. It is the warmest of the three PS1 Final Fantasy games and has aged the best visually. The remastered version is on PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC and mobile, with optional speed-up and battle-assist toggles.

7. Vagrant Story (2000)

Yasumi Matsuno's dark, single-hero dungeon crawler set in the same world as Final Fantasy Tactics. Weapon crafting and chain combos are demanding, but the atmosphere of Leá Monde and the translation are among the best on the console. It has not had a modern remaster; the official way to play digitally is the PS one Classics release for PS3, PSP and Vita.

8. Final Fantasy VIII (1999)

Realistic character designs, the Junction system and a school-for-mercenaries setting made this the most divisive PS1 Final Fantasy, but its Triple Triad card game and big set pieces still land. Players who break the Junction system early tend to love it. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered (2019) is on PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC and mobile, with higher-resolution character models and speed-up toggles.

9. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (1999)

A remake of the Sega CD original, with animated cutscenes, songs and a charming, character-driven quest about Alex and Luna. It was also a landmark localization from Working Designs, famous for its lavish packaging. Lunar Remastered Collection (2025) bundles it with Lunar 2: Eternal Blue on PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox and PC.

10. Star Ocean: The Second Story (1999)

tri-Ace's sci-fi fantasy offers two playable leads, real-time battles, private actions that change your party's relationships and more than 80 endings. Crafting and item creation can break the game in delightful ways. Star Ocean: The Second Story R (2023) is a full remake with 2D-HD visuals and reworked combat on PS4, PS5, Switch and PC.

11. The Legend of Dragoon (2000)

Sony's big-budget answer to Final Fantasy uses timed button presses called Additions and transformations into armored Dragoons. The story is slow to start but builds to a proper epic across four discs. It came back as a PS1 classic on PS4 and PS5 in 2023, available in the PS Plus Premium Classics Catalog or as a standalone PlayStation Store purchase, complete with trophies, rewind and save states.

Game Arts' adventure is pure optimism: a boy named Justin sets out to explore the world, and its timeline-based battle system, where attacks can cancel enemy actions, is still one of the best designs in the genre. The PS1 port arrived in North America in 1999 after the Sega Saturn original. Grandia HD Collection, which pairs it with Grandia II, is on Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

13. Breath of Fire III (1998)

Capcom's sprite-based RPG follows Ryu, a boy who can turn into a dragon, through a coming-of-age story in two halves. Its Master apprenticeship system and dragon-gene combinations reward experimenting. There is no modern re-release; the official digital option is the PSP port and its PSN release, playable on PSP and PS Vita.

A Western-flavored fantasy with guns, puzzle-solving tools in dungeons and one of the most memorable opening themes on the console. It was Sony's first big in-house RPG and started a long-running series. The original is on PS4 and PS5 as a PS1 classic through the PS Plus Premium Classics Catalog, and it can also be bought on the PlayStation Store.

The first Suikoden is short, brisk and the perfect prologue for Suikoden II, since your save data carries over and unlocks extras in the sequel. Its castle-building and 108-character roster started a formula nobody has quite copied. Play it in Suikoden I & II HD Remaster on PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox and PC.

Honorable mentions

Breath of Fire IV (2000) is a beautiful sprite-based sequel with a genuinely dark second protagonist, and it is now on PC via GOG's Preservation Program with modern controller support. The Legend of Legaia (1999) has a clever fighting-game-style Arts system, but it has never received an official modern re-release, so the original disc is the only legitimate way to play it.

How we ranked them

  • Legacy and influence. How much each game shaped the JRPG genre and the games that followed.
  • How well it plays today. Battle systems, pacing and translation quality matter more than nostalgia.
  • How easy it is to play legally. Official remasters and re-releases on current hardware earn a nudge, but classics with no re-release still made the list on merit.
