1.Best for young kids
Chunky licensed handheld
Big buttons, a short list of officially licensed games, and nothing to configure. If it gets dropped, it is not a disaster.
🧒Best Retro Handheld for Kids
The appeal of a retro handheld for a child is everything it does not have: no online store, no accounts, no ads, no way to spend money by accident.
Prioritise durability and a menu a six-year-old can navigate over raw emulation power.

2.Best for older kids
Standard budget retro handheld
A proper D-pad and shoulder buttons open up the SNES and GBA libraries, which is where most of the genuinely great kid-friendly games live.
3.Best for sharing
Mini console for the TV
Two controllers and a big screen make it a family thing rather than a solo one.

FAQ
What age is a retro handheld good for?
Around six and up for licensed plug-and-play models with simple menus; older kids get more out of a device with proper shoulder buttons.
Can kids spend money on these?
No — dedicated retro handhelds have no store and normally no internet connection at all.
Are the games age-appropriate?
Licensed collections list every game on the box, so check that list before buying. Avoid no-name handhelds that claim hundreds of built-in games: those libraries are unlicensed copies and are not curated for children.
