Missing Letter — Play Free Online

Free word game — instant play, no signup, no download

Missing Letter shows a word with a letter removed and asks you to supply it. Unlike a full anagram, the structure is intact — so the puzzle is about recognising a word from a partial pattern, which is much closer to how reading actually works.

How to play

A word appears with one letter replaced by a gap.

Work out which letter belongs there.

Type or select it.

Correct answers load the next word.

Your score is words completed.

What it actually trains

Orthographic pattern completion — reconstructing a word from an incomplete visual pattern. It is the same process that lets you read text with typos in it without noticing.

Tips to score higher

Read what is there aloud with a pause at the gap. Speech often supplies the letter automatically.

Check the letters immediately either side. English has strong constraints on which letters can follow which.

Vowel gaps are usually easier than consonant gaps — if it is a consonant, expect to work harder.

If two letters both seem to fit, pick the more common word.

Frequently asked questions

Is there always one answer?

Yes — every puzzle is built so that only one letter makes a valid word.

Is this good for spelling practice?

It exercises recognition rather than production, so it helps less with spelling than writing the word out does.

Are the words common?

They come from a standard English word list, so nothing obscure.

Why are consonant gaps harder?

Vowels are heavily constrained by the surrounding consonants. Consonants have more plausible substitutes at any given position.
