Maths Anxiety and Timed Tests — What Helps

Plenty of people can do arithmetic perfectly well until a clock appears, and then cannot. That is a real effect with a plausible mechanism, and it is worth understanding before deciding whether timed drills are a good idea for you or for a child. This site is full of sixty-second drills. This is the honest guide to when they help, when they make things worse, and how to practise arithmetic without the timer if the timer is the problem.

Why pressure makes arithmetic harder

Mental arithmetic runs on working memory — the small amount of information you can hold and manipulate at once. Carrying a ten, holding a running total, remembering which step you were on: all of it sits there.

Worry occupies the same space. Thoughts about how badly this is going, or about being watched, are themselves information being held and rehearsed, and they are competing for the capacity the arithmetic needs. That is the most widely discussed explanation for why anxious people underperform on exactly the tasks that need working memory most, and it fits what people report: the steps are known, they just will not stay in place.

Two things follow from that. The effect is largest on the tasks with the heaviest working-memory load — multi-step problems, carrying, long division — and smallest on facts that are genuinely automatic, because recall of an automatic fact barely uses working memory at all.

Why automatic facts are the best defence

This is the practical point. A fact you have to work out costs working memory every time it comes up, and under pressure that is exactly the resource you have least of. A fact you simply know costs almost nothing.

So the person who knows 7 × 8 = 56 instantly has more capacity left for the rest of the problem than the person who reaches it by 7 × 7 + 7 — even though both get there. Under calm conditions the difference is small. Under pressure it is the difference between coping and losing the thread.

Which means the route out of freezing on timed tests is not to practise being timed. It is to make the underlying facts automatic, so there is less to hold in the first place.

Practising without the timer

Every drill on this site has a timer because a timer measures fluency. If the timer is the problem, there are ways to practise that do not use one.

Printable worksheets. A worksheet with an answer key has no clock, no score and no audience. Mark it afterwards, redo only the ones that were wrong.

The fact pages. Each of the multiplication facts has its own page with the shortcut, the division facts and the neighbours. Reading and rehearsing one fact at a time is practice without any performance in it.

Self-paced checking. The Times Table Check times each fact but never shows a clock while you answer and never fails you — it just reports which facts are slow.

Say them out loud. Rehearsing aloud uses a different route from silent reading and is much harder to do anxiously fast.

None of these is a lesser form of practice. Retrieval is what builds recall, and retrieval happens whether or not a clock is running.

If you are helping a child

Separate fluency from ability. Being slow at recall is not being bad at maths, and saying so out loud matters. Plenty of strong mathematicians are unremarkable at arithmetic speed.

Never use the timer as the assessment. Time facts to find out what to practise, not to produce a score anyone is judged on.

Shrink the target. 'Learn your times tables' is overwhelming. 'These four facts this fortnight' is not, and it is what is actually needed.

Let them see the structure. Knowing that half the grid is a mirror image, and that the 9s follow a rule, turns an arbitrary memorisation task into something with handholds.

Keep sessions short. A minute a day, stopped before it stops being fine. Ending on a good run matters more than the number of questions.

What this site does and does not claim

The drills here measure and improve arithmetic fluency. That is a real, narrow, useful thing: the facts get faster, and faster facts make longer calculations easier.

They are not treatment for anxiety, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. If maths anxiety is affecting schoolwork, work or day-to-day life, that is worth raising with a teacher, a GP or a psychologist — people who can actually assess it.
