Brain Training for Students — What Actually Helps Revision

Most revision advice is folklore. Some of the most confidently repeated study techniques have been tested and found to do almost nothing, while two of the best-supported ones are barely taught at all. This is what the learning research actually supports, what it does not, and where the games on this site genuinely fit — which is narrower than you might hope, and useful in a specific way.

The two techniques with the strongest evidence

Retrieval practice

Testing yourself on material strengthens retention more than studying it again does. This is the testing effect, and it is among the most reliably reproduced findings in learning research. It works even when the test is hard and you get answers wrong — the effort of retrieving is what does the work.

In practice: close the book and write down what you remember, then check. That feels worse than re-reading and it is substantially more effective. Re-reading feels productive precisely because it is easy, which is the trap.

Spaced repetition

The same total study time spread across several days produces far more durable learning than the same time in one block. The effect is large, it has been known for over a century, and it is the reason cramming produces a pass and no retention.

The techniques that do not hold up

Learning styles. The idea that people learn better when material matches their 'visual' or 'auditory' style is one of the most thoroughly tested claims in education, and the studies designed properly to test it have consistently not found the effect. It remains almost universally believed.

Highlighting and re-reading. Both rate poorly in reviews of study techniques. They feel productive and produce very little, largely because they are passive.

Cramming. It works for tomorrow's exam and not for the one after. If you need the material again, it is close to wasted time.

Background music with lyrics while reading. It competes with the verbal processing you are using to read, and the effect is measurable.

Where brain games genuinely fit

Not as a substitute for studying. Nobody has shown that playing memory games improves exam results, and anybody claiming otherwise is overselling.

Three honest uses:

As a start ritual. The hardest part of a study session is starting it, and a two-minute game with a clear end point is an easier start than the subject itself. Math Drills runs thirty seconds.

Revisit what you got wrong sooner. That is spaced repetition, and it is the whole mechanism behind flashcard systems.

Sleep between sessions. Consolidation happens during sleep, and a session followed by a bad night is partly wasted.

Put the phone in another room. Interruption costs are among the better-documented findings here, and proximity alone costs attention.
