European Capitals Quiz
Test yourself on every European capital.
Every capital in Europe. The most familiar continent to start with β and the block where the small states and the Balkans quietly cost you points.
The best place to start with capitals
Europe is the right first continent for capitals for the same reason it is for flags: you already know a dozen of them. Paris, London, Rome, Madrid, Berlin, Lisbon, Vienna, Amsterdam, Athens and a few more come free, so you are filling a gap rather than starting from nothing.
What is left is about thirty capitals, and they split into three difficulty bands.
Band one: the ones you nearly know
Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, Dublin, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki, Brussels, Bern. Most people recognise all of these and just need to attach them firmly to the right country.
The traps here are small: - Switzerland is Bern, not Zurich or Geneva. Zurich is larger and Geneva more internationally visible, so both are frequently guessed. - The Netherlands is Amsterdam constitutionally, but the government sits in The Hague. Quizzes almost always want Amsterdam; it is worth knowing why the question is ambiguous.
Band two: the Balkans
This is where scores drop. Eight or nine countries, most of them formed or reformed within living memory, and few of their capitals are household names outside the region.
- Serbia β Belgrade
- Croatia β Zagreb
- Slovenia β Ljubljana
- Bosnia and Herzegovina β Sarajevo
- Montenegro β Podgorica
- North Macedonia β Skopje
- Albania β Tirana
- Kosovo β Pristina
- Bulgaria β Sofia
- Romania β Bucharest
Bucharest and Budapest are the pair that catches almost everyone. Bucharest is Romania; Budapest is Hungary. They sound alike, they are geographically close, and they are swapped constantly. The fix is a deliberate hook: Budapest sits on the Danube and was formed by merging Buda and Pest, two towns on opposite banks. Bucharest has no such story, so the one with the origin story is Hungary's.
Band three: the microstates
Small, easy to forget entirely, and free points once learned because quizzes love them:
- Monaco β Monaco. The city and the country share a name.
- Vatican City β Vatican City. Same.
- San Marino β San Marino. Same again.
- Liechtenstein β Vaduz.
- Andorra β Andorra la Vella.
- Malta β Valletta.
- Luxembourg β Luxembourg City.
Notice the pattern: for several of the smallest states, the capital shares the country's name. That is one rule covering four answers.
The Baltics and the east
- Estonia β Tallinn
- Latvia β Riga
- Lithuania β Vilnius
- Belarus β Minsk
- Ukraine β Kyiv
- Moldova β ChiΘinΔu
The three Baltic capitals are commonly shuffled between their countries. Alphabetical order helps here and is one of the few places it does: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania run north to south, and so do Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius.
Where to go next
European Flags covers exactly the same countries from a different angle, which is a much more efficient use of study time than starting a new continent β each one reinforces the other.
Frequently asked questions
What is the capital of Switzerland?
Bern. Zurich is the largest city and Geneva hosts many international organisations, so both are commonly guessed, but Bern has been the seat of the Swiss federal government since 1848.
How do you remember Bucharest versus Budapest?
Budapest is Hungary and Bucharest is Romania. The reliable hook is that Budapest was formed by merging Buda and Pest, two towns facing each other across the Danube β so the one with the origin story is the Hungarian one.
Is Amsterdam or The Hague the capital of the Netherlands?
Amsterdam is the constitutional capital and the answer quizzes expect. However the Dutch government, parliament and supreme court all sit in The Hague, which is why the question is genuinely ambiguous and worth knowing both halves of.
Which European capitals share their country's name?
Monaco, Vatican City, San Marino and Luxembourg City all effectively share the name of the state. It is a pattern concentrated among the microstates, and learning it as one rule covers several answers at once.
