Identify continents on the world map.

Identify continents on the world map. The simplest geography quiz here — and a genuinely good first step for beginners and younger learners.

The right place to start

If world geography feels overwhelming, start here. Seven answers, large targets, and it establishes the frame that everything else hangs on. Countries are much easier to learn once you can place the continent they belong to without thinking.

This is also the quiz to hand to a child first.

The seven continents

Africa — straddles the Equator, the second-largest continent by both area and population, 54 countries.

Asia — the largest by both measures, running from Turkey in the west to Japan in the east.

Europe — small in area, dense in countries. Its boundary with Asia is a convention rather than a physical feature, which is why some countries are counted either way.

North America — Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. People routinely forget the last two are included.

South America — twelve countries, dominated by Brazil.

Oceania — Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific island nations.

Antarctica — no countries, no permanent population, governed by international treaty.

The boundaries that are conventions, not facts

This is the genuinely interesting part, and worth knowing because it explains why quizzes disagree:

  • The Europe–Asia line is drawn along the Ural Mountains and the Caucasus, which is an agreed convention rather than a natural break. Russia spans both. Turkey spans both. Kazakhstan spans both. Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are assigned either way depending on the source.
  • Central America is part of North America, not a separate continent, and neither is the Caribbean.
  • Oceania is not the same thing as Australia. Australia is one country within it.
  • Some systems use six continents, merging Europe and Asia into Eurasia, or merging the Americas. Which model you were taught depends largely on where you went to school.

Why the count varies

There is no scientific definition of a continent. The seven-continent model is standard in the English-speaking world; a six-continent model combining the Americas is standard across much of Latin America and Europe; some models combine Europe and Asia instead.

None of them is wrong. Quizzes use the seven-continent model because it is the most widely taught in English, and that is the only reason.

Where to go next

Once continents are automatic, Click the Country on the Map narrows the same skill to individual countries, and the per-continent map quizzes let you clear one region at a time rather than facing the whole world at once. Frequently asked questions

How many continents are there?

Seven under the model most widely taught in English: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania and Antarctica. Other models use six by combining the Americas or by merging Europe and Asia into Eurasia. There is no scientific definition, so none is strictly wrong.

Is Central America a continent?

No, it is part of North America, as is the Caribbean. North America runs from Canada down through Mexico and Central America to Panama, and includes the Caribbean islands — which is why its country count is 23 rather than 3.

Which countries are in two continents?

Russia and Turkey both straddle the Europe–Asia boundary, as does Kazakhstan. Egypt spans Africa and Asia across the Sinai Peninsula. Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan sit near the Caucasus line and are assigned either way depending on the source.

Is Australia a continent or a country?

Both, in different senses. Australia is a country, and it is also the main landmass of the continent usually called Oceania or Australasia, which includes New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific island nations.
