The 12 Midwest states
The US Census Bureau's Midwest region has 12 states in two groups:
- East North Central: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin
- West North Central: Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota
How to play
Each of the 12 is asked once, in random order. Click the state on the map; a miss highlights the right one, and the end screen lists the states to practise.
Tips
- Stack the Plains: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, top to bottom.
- Great Lakes states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan (two peninsulas), Illinois, Indiana, Ohio.
- Iowa and Missouri sit between the Plains stack and Illinois, with Iowa on top.

Is Kentucky in the Midwest?
Not in the Census definition — Kentucky is in the South region.

Find and click each of the 12 states on the US map. Learn them in geographic order — neighbour by neighbour — rather than alphabetically, and say the capital as you click each one. Once you can finish without a miss, try the other regions and then the full 50-state map.
