UK Countries Quiz
England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland โ and more.
The four countries of the United Kingdom and the geography people routinely get wrong โ including the difference between the UK, Great Britain and the British Isles.
The distinction almost everyone gets wrong
These four terms mean different things and are used interchangeably by nearly everyone:
- Great Britain is the island containing England, Scotland and Wales. It is a landmass.
- The United Kingdom is the sovereign state: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is a country.
- The British Isles is the wider archipelago, including the island of Ireland and thousands of smaller islands. It is a geographic term and a contested one, since it appears to include the Republic of Ireland, an independent state.
- England is one country within the UK, not a synonym for any of the above.
Getting this right is the single most useful thing on this page.
The four countries and their capitals
- England โ London
- Scotland โ Edinburgh, not Glasgow, which is larger
- Wales โ Cardiff
- Northern Ireland โ Belfast
London is the capital of both England and the UK as a whole.
Crown dependencies are not part of the UK
The Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are Crown dependencies. They are not part of the United Kingdom and not part of the European Union's arrangements โ they are self-governing possessions of the Crown with their own parliaments and their own currencies alongside sterling.
This appears in quizzes constantly and is answered wrongly almost as often as the Great Britain question.
Ireland
The island of Ireland holds two jurisdictions: Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland, an independent sovereign state with its capital at Dublin. The Republic is not part of the UK and has not been since 1922.
Counties
Below the four countries sits a layer of counties, council areas and unitary authorities that has been reorganised repeatedly, which is why sources disagree. England's traditional counties, its ceremonial counties and its administrative areas are three overlapping systems, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each use different arrangements again.
For quiz purposes the four countries and their capitals carry almost all the value; the county layer is where sources stop agreeing with each other.
Where to go next
European Capitals covers London and Dublin alongside the rest of the continent, which puts the UK and Ireland in their wider context.
