US Capital โ†’ State Quiz

Given a capital, name the US state.

Given a US state capital, name the state. The harder direction, because the prompts are cities most people have never visited.

Why this direction is harder

State to capital gives you a familiar prompt โ€” you know all 50 states โ€” and asks for something unfamiliar. This reverses it: the prompt is Pierre, Frankfort, Montpelier or Augusta, and if you do not already know those cities you have nothing to reason from.

There is no shortcut. What there is, is a small set of clusters that cause most of the errors.

The confusable capitals

Cities that sound like other places: - Columbia is South Carolina; Columbus is Ohio. One letter apart, two different states. - Charleston is West Virginia's capital โ€” but the famous Charleston is in South Carolina, which is not its capital. - Jackson is Mississippi. Jacksonville is Florida's biggest city and not its capital. - Springfield is Illinois โ€” and there are Springfields in a dozen other states. - Albany is New York, but there is an Albany in Georgia and Oregon too.

Cities named after people, which cluster in the mind and get swapped: - Jefferson City โ€” Missouri. - Carson City โ€” Nevada. - Madison โ€” Wisconsin. - Lincoln โ€” Nebraska. - Jackson โ€” Mississippi. - Bismarck โ€” North Dakota.

The small New England capitals, which almost nobody encounters otherwise: - Montpelier โ€” Vermont. The least populous state capital in the country. - Concord โ€” New Hampshire. - Augusta โ€” Maine. - Providence โ€” Rhode Island. The one most people do know. - Hartford โ€” Connecticut.

The geographic trick

Many capitals sit near the geographic centre of their state, because they were placed to be reachable from everywhere in an era of slow travel. Columbus is close to the middle of Ohio; Indianapolis is close to the middle of Indiana; Jefferson City is close to the middle of Missouri; Pierre is close to the middle of South Dakota.

That is a genuinely useful prior. When you half-recognise a capital and are choosing between two states, the one where that city would sit centrally is usually right.

The -polis and -ville tells

Indianapolis and Annapolis share the Greek polis. Nashville, Jacksonville and Louisville share the French ville. Neither tells you the state, but grouping capitals by name-ending gives your memory another handle, and having two independent routes to a fact roughly doubles the chance of retrieving it under pressure.

How to practise this one

Do the state-to-capital direction until it is solid, then flip. Trying to learn the reverse direction cold means learning both halves of each pair simultaneously, which is much slower.

Then review only your misses. Re-testing on Boston and Denver teaches nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Which state has Columbia as its capital?

South Carolina. Columbus, one letter different, is the capital of Ohio. The pair is one of the most frequently swapped in the whole quiz.

Is Charleston the capital of South Carolina?

No. Charleston is the capital of West Virginia. South Carolina's capital is Columbia. The famous historic Charleston is indeed in South Carolina, which is exactly why this catches so many people.

What is the least populous US state capital?

Montpelier, Vermont, with well under 10,000 residents. Pierre in South Dakota and Augusta in Maine are also very small, all of which makes them unfamiliar as prompts and hard to place.

Which capitals are named after people?

Jefferson City in Missouri, Carson City in Nevada, Madison in Wisconsin, Lincoln in Nebraska, Jackson in Mississippi and Bismarck in North Dakota, among others. They form a natural cluster in memory, which is why they get swapped with each other more than with anything else.
