Zoom-Out Challenge

Identify a country as the map slowly zooms out.

The map starts zoomed deep into one country and pulls back every fraction of a second. Name it early for up to 16 points; wait for the neighbours to appear and it is worth 1.

How scoring works

Each round is worth 16 points at the first frame and one point less with every step of the zoom. A wrong answer scores nothing and reveals the country in context. Eight rounds make a game, so the maximum is 128.

What to look for

  • Coastlines first. A long straight coast, a gulf or a peninsula shows up long before the borders do.
  • Straight borders usually mean a colonial-era line โ€” common in North Africa and the Middle East.
  • Lakes and rivers along a border (Lake Victoria, the Mekong, the Rio Grande) are giveaways once they come into view.

The countries asked are the ones large enough to draw clearly on a world map. For outlines without context, try the country silhouette quiz; for clicking the map yourself, click the country.
